Venture: Solar Sister
Solar Sister supports local women in Africa to create clean energy businesses.
Expert: Fabio Hernandez
Data Manager Lead for Latin America, PUR Projet
Solar Sister partnered with Rippleworks to expand their data collection system.
In Sub-Saharan Africa alone, roughly 600 million people lack electricity and 890 million cook with traditional fuels (wood, charcoal, kerosene). Solar Sister trains and supports women to deliver clean energy directly to homes in rural African communities. They provide essential services and training that enable women entrepreneurs to build sustainable businesses in their own communities. Solar Sister operates in Nigeria, Tanzania, and Kenya and provides them with comprehensive training on the business, technology, and leadership skills necessary to kickstart a sustainable clean energy business. To date, they have kickstarted over 8,100 clean energy entrepreneurs, allowing local women to contribute to household earnings, gain confidence, and financial independence.
One of Solar Sister’s top priorities going into this project was generating and providing more detailed and verifiable end user data so entrepreneurs can make better data-driven business decisions.
Solar Sister partnered with Fabio Hernandez, a business transformation expert who specializes in designing and implementing data systems that help NGOs and impact-driven organizations manage their data efficiently. Together, they:
• Created and tested a new working prototype that will help Solar Sister simplify data collection from end-customers.
• Designed an incentives system for Solar Sister Entrepreneurs to collect data that will enable them to earn more money.
• Improved the quality of their data products to users.
