Hala Systems is a social enterprise working to transform the nature of protection and accountability in the world’s toughest places by democratizing advanced defense, sensing, and artificial intelligence technology. Hala is currently saving lives, reducing trauma, and improving resilience for millions of people.
Hala’s top priority was enhancing their Sentry Warning System to better generate credible, real-time, situational awareness of threats in conflict zones. Hala partnered with Rippleworks to build a low-cost acoustic detection device capable of alerting civilians of incoming missiles, bombs, and gunshots.

Hala Systems partnered with Rippleworks Expert Hugh McLaughlin, a leading signal processing technologist who brought experience from Signal Essence, Acoustics Gadgets, and Cisco. Together, they:
• Developed a foundational understanding of microphones/acoustic solutions, from selecting a mic to designing its environmental casing
• Implemented a simple, elegant technical solution to a hardware problem using an omnidirectional microphone
• Prototyped an end-to-end solution to detect and geolocate a sound; successfully tested the solution in a controlled environment
