Venture: Foundation for Ecological Security
Foundation for Ecological Security (FES) works to ecologically restore and conserve land and water resources in fragile, degraded and marginalized regions in India through the collective efforts of village communities.

FES partnered with Rippleworks to use human-centered design to define FES’ community-facing land management tool.

The Foundation for Ecological Security (FES) is a non-profit organization dedicated to the conservation and sustainable management of natural resources in India, with a specific focus on ecological security. A quarter of India’s land, almost 205 million acres of community forests, pastures and water bodies, are neglected. These shared resources are essential to rural economies and have the potential to meet the livelihood needs of more than 350 million of India’s rural poor.

One of FES’ top priorities going into this project was equipping communities with tools and knowledge to make informed decisions about resource management.

FES partnered with Katherine Lee, a design strategy leader and master storyteller with 25+ years of experience specializing in building customer driven product and brand experiences informed by qualitative and quantitative insights. Together, they:

• Fast-tracked two rounds of concept development, moving from basic prototypes to more refined versions based on user feedback.

• Created low-fidelity prototypes and tested them in the field.

• Strengthened their relationships with local communities and gained a deeper understanding of user behavior and the local context for natural resource management.
